World Capitals Quiz
A free map quiz for the capital cities of all 196 countries. The quiz shows a capital – Nairobi, Canberra, Lima – and students tap the country it belongs to. In hard mode they type every capital they can remember while the map fills in.
Because every answer lands on the map, students learn where each country is at the same time as its capital. It’s best for middle and high school, and for students who already know their way around the World Countries quiz.
How to use it in class
- Pick a mode. Classic shows a capital and students tap its country. Hard asks them to type every capital they can remember. Explore has no score – tap any country to see its capital.
- Put it on the board. Tap the fullscreen button so the map fills the screen. Tiny capitals and islands have a tappable dot that shrinks as you zoom in.
- Play Classic. Students get three tries for each capital. A wrong tap shows which country was tapped and its capital, so every mistake teaches another pair. Colors show how it went: green first try, yellow second, orange third, red missed.
- Try Hard mode. Each country fills in the moment its capital is spelled correctly – no Enter needed, and “St.” or “Saint” both work. After a minute, spelling help appears once the first four letters are right.
- Review and share. At the end, “Review map” lets students tap any country to check its capital, and “Challenge a friend” makes a link with the score for someone else to beat.
Classroom ideas
One continent at a time
Use Explore to tap through one continent’s countries and their capitals on the board, then play Classic and see how many students can match on the first try.
“Not the biggest city” capitals
Many capitals aren’t a country’s largest city – Canberra (not Sydney), Ottawa (not Toronto), Brasília (not São Paulo), Abuja (not Lagos). Ask students why a country might build or choose a smaller capital.
Capital of the day
Start each lesson with one capital from the news or your current unit. Students find its country in Explore and share one fact about it.

Frequently asked questions
How many capitals are in this quiz?
There are 196 – one for each country in the World Countries quiz, including Vatican City, Kosovo and Taiwan.
What about countries with more than one capital?
The quiz shows the capital most commonly taught, and also accepts the others when typing. For example, South Africa shows Pretoria but Cape Town and Bloemfontein also count, and Bolivia shows Sucre but La Paz also counts.
Do accents and spelling matter?
Accents don’t – “Brasilia” and “Brasília” both count – and common spellings like Kiev or Kyiv, Ulan Bator or Ulaanbaatar are accepted. After a minute in hard mode, spelling help appears once the first four letters are right.
Where do the capitals come from?
Each capital was checked against two independent sources: the open world-countries dataset and Wikipedia’s list of national capitals.
