Fractions Game
A free fractions game with three ways to practice: name the fraction of a shape that’s shaded, tap a fraction’s spot on a number line, or compare two fractions with <, > or =.
Levels go from halves, thirds and fourths up to twelfths, matching what students learn from 2nd through 4th grade. Fraction bars and circles make every answer something students can see.
How to use it in class
- Pick a mode. “Name it” shows a shaded circle or bar. “Number line” asks students to tap where a fraction goes between 0 and 1. “Compare” shows two fractions with fraction bars.
- Pick a level. Halves, thirds and fourths; up to eighths; or up to twelfths.
- Explain the answer. After every answer the game says why – how many equal parts are shaded, or how to count along the number line.
- Look for equal fractions. On the higher levels some comparisons are equal, like 1/2 and 2/4, which is a great way to talk about equivalent fractions.
Classroom ideas
Pizza talk
In “Name it”, ask students to say the fraction that is shaded and the fraction that is not – together they make one whole.
Human number line
Before playing “Number line”, have students stand along a rope from 0 to 1 holding fraction cards.
Prove it
In “Compare”, have students explain their answer using the fraction bars before tapping.
