Canada Provinces and Territories Quiz

A free map quiz for all 13 of Canada’s provinces and territories – 10 provinces from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador, plus Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Students tap each one as it’s named, or type every one they know.

With only 13 to find, it’s a quick quiz that works well as a warm-up, from upper elementary through high school. Prince Edward Island, the smallest province, has a dot to tap so it’s easy to hit.

How to use it in class

  1. Pick a mode. Classic names a province or territory and students tap it on the map. Hard asks them to type every province or territory they can remember. Explore has no score – tap any province or territory to see its name.
  2. Put it on the board. Tap the fullscreen button and use + and − to zoom into crowded areas. Tiny provinces and territories and islands have a tappable dot that shrinks as you zoom in.
  3. Play Classic. Each province or territory turns green on the first try, yellow on the second and orange on the third. After three misses it flashes red and the next one comes up.
  4. Try Hard mode. Each province or territory fills in as soon as it is spelled correctly – no Enter needed. After a minute, spelling help appears once the first four letters are right. Tap “Give up” to see what was missed.
  5. Review and share. At the end, “Review map” shows every province or territory in its result color, and “Challenge a friend” makes a link with the score for someone else to beat.

Classroom ideas

West to east

Have students name the provinces in order from the Pacific to the Atlantic, then check their order on the board in Explore mode.

Provinces vs. territories

Ask students to find the three territories first and talk about what makes a territory different from a province.

Pair it with US States

Play the US States quiz and this one back to back, and look at which provinces border which states.
