Crossword Puzzle Maker & Themed Crosswords

Make your own crossword in seconds: type your vocabulary words and clues, and the puzzle builds itself – numbered and ready to play on screen or print with an answer key.

There are also seven ready-made crosswords on space, animals, weather, the human body, world geography, US geography and math words. It works from upper elementary through high school, and for any subject with vocabulary to practice.

How to use it in class

  1. Pick a puzzle. Choose a theme at the top, or tap “Make your own”.
  2. Make your own. Type one word per line with its clue, like “OCEAN - A huge body of salt water”, then tap “Build my crossword”. Your list is saved on this device.
  3. Solve it. Tap a square or a clue and type. Tap the same square again, or press the space bar, to switch between across and down.
  4. Check and reveal. Check marks wrong letters in red, and you can reveal one word or the whole puzzle.
  5. Print it. Print gives a clean puzzle with numbered clues, and “Print answers” gives the answer key. Try “New layout” for a different arrangement of the same words.

Frequently asked questions

How many words can I use?

Between 6 and 20 words works best, and up to 30 is allowed. Any word that can’t cross another word is listed, so you can change it or add words that share more letters.

Can answers have spaces?

Answers are letters only – spaces and dashes are removed, so “New York” becomes NEWYORK.

Can I print an answer key?

Yes. Tap “Print answers” for a copy with every square filled in.

Is my word list saved?

Yes, on this device. It’s never uploaded.
